Looking for a good and detailed side-by-side comparison of the Amazon Kindle 2 vs. Barnes & Nobles' Nook e-readers? What about the Kindle DX? You've come to the right place. This page provides a comprehensive overview of both versions of the Kindle and the Nook so you can choose the best e-reader to suit your needs.

Price: (As of November 2009)

  • Amazon Kindle 2: $259
  • Amazon Kindle DX: $489

If you are looking for an e-reader this Christmas, the Amazon Kindle and the Nook e-reader are the most popular items and are sold for the same retail price. There are a few notable differences. The Nook has a touch screen display, a technology similar to the iPod touch screen. While this may be an attractive feature, the Kindle has international access and may be a better choice for some. The Kindle also has a "read to me" feature, or text-to-voice function.

*Note: The Barnes & Noble Nook was out-of-stock in the weeks leading up to Christmas 2009, but customers could pre-order and the delivery date was set at January 4, 2010.

I do like the nook but the Kindle 2 is just so darn pretty!

I like the look and features of the new Kindle, one thing that does bother me is the fact that you cannot use the extra memory with the Kindle DX. Whilst there is an larger memory than the Kindle, the lack of SD card puts me off.

I have had a Kindle 2 since August 08. I love it. With the wireless off, I get 4-6 WEEKS out of one charge. That is everyday use for about 1-2 hours. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

I have a question. Does the price of purchasing e-books vary? Is there a difference in price between the kindle and the nook? Can you connect headphones to either or both of these items?

I have a Kindle DX, I LOVE IT!! so awesome! even though it lacks sd slot, who cares cause it hold so much! plus if your getting one of these devices for reading, the DX wins, books are cheaper on amazon and more selection, I got the entire works of Jane Austen, Alexander Dumas for .99 cents each!! all their books for .99 cents unbelievable!! I wouldn't choose anything over the DX.

Why does Apple say that the iPad is used for reading books when people buy nooks and kindles for the purpose of reading?

I just purchased a nook last night without knowing about the kindle. Did I mess up? Should I return it and get a kindle? I only paid 199.99 for 3G & Wi-Fi anywhere. I am reading that it is slow to boot up. Is that the only problem? Are there really more books on Amazon than Barnes and Noble? I am not a huge book reader but I don't want this to be like the Zune was to the IPod. Please help me decide if I should return the nook or keep it.

Hi Darlene, you should keep the Nook..it's rlly good. It's got eternal memory space which Kindle hasn't gotten to yet. The color touch screen makes it much easier to find and get to what you need. I've been using my nook since i got it for Christmas and i love it. I'm 16 so it's kinda weird for me to love reading off a device but it's nice. Keep it :) oh btw Nook's nice cause you can customize it with your own designer cover and put in ur own pics for ur background photo and screensaver. Hope u enjoy using it.

im 16 and have no clue which one to get i read a lot but am worried that ill pick the wrong one any suggestions?? any kids my age have suggestions??

I think the new Kindle 3 (3rd generation) blows the Nook out of the water. But now you have to take into consideration the Nook Color. It's pretty awesome, but only for certain types of reading...

Always a good idea to compare e-readers before you buy. The prices on these have dropped considerably since this was written. You can get current prices (11/2010) and a lot more comparisons here: http://hubpages.com/hub/eReader-Comparisons

I read on another comparisons page that the Kindle uses Sprint and AT&T wifi. I live in a small town in wyoming. We only get Verizon and some places it is scarce. Would Kindle be a good buy for me?
